Your semester exam is at 9:30 am on Wednesday, May 21. The room assignments will be posted just inside the doors of rooms 100 - 103. Your review sheet gives you what to expect on the test, but I will list the general categories here:

Sentence structure - know how to correct a comma splice (CS), sentence fragment (SF), and a run-on (RO) sentence.

Know the parts and purposes of a 5-paragraph essay.

Know the notes given on The Grapes of Wrath and "change " (as used by William Wilberforce, etc.).

Know all authors, titles, and info on "American Authors" (see that part of this website). Remember I gave you the added info of the main characters of The Scarlet Letter, Moby Dick, and The Grapes of Wrath.

Know how to punctuate dialogue.

Know the basic comma rules and how to apply them to sentences.

Know the uses of these words - its / its --- there / their / they're --- your / you're

Know the last list of vocab words - dissident, loquacious, amalgam, overweening, superimpose, gumption, timorous, cede.

Know these literary terms - allusion, tone, irony, repetition, classicism, romanticism, realism.

        -800 words, typed, double-spaced
        -must be true (can be your story or the story of someone you know well - in order to get all the info on the story)
        -Must contain a lesson or message
        -Must have a resolution of conflict (for example, not just a diary of events)
        -Must contain dialogue (conversation), properly punctuated. For help, look at the story in our textbook on p. 733 or go to

    You are to have a career interview (this does not have to include 2 hours of observation). You will turn in

    You may interview a relative, but you may NOT interview a CA employee or parent
    This should be TYPED; for extra credit, turn in an internet article (only one page is necessary) about this career

    You are to write a serious letter in which you express an opinion or concern, 100-200 words - this is a FINAL DRAFT - no spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes (seek help if necessary). IF YOU DON"T HAVE THE ADDRESS OF PERSON YOU ARE WRITING TYPED CORRECTLY ON THE LETTER, THE ASSIGNMENT GETS NO POINTS.
    Follow business letter format (left aligned, Google "business letter" if you don't know format)
    Your letter can be to a magazine, the most recent issue. In your letter, mention the title of article you are writing about OR
    Your letter can be to a newspaper about a community situation or recent article (mention the title of article) OR
    Your letter can be to a government leader (go to www.congress.org, type in your zip code and click on person for address) OR
    Your letter can be to a company

        --each frame must contain a picture and words (choose highlights of the story, favorite lines of the poem)

        Contrast Judy and Dexter (go indepth with this), analyzing their philosophies of love. Be sure to include:
        --analysis of the term "winter dreams"

        Write your philosophy of love, courtship, commitment, marriage, etc. This should be 2/3 of the essay

        You must get at least a 70% (notice I lowered this) on each. You must look at questions and answers to learn from your test.
        You can get extra credit if you do another set of English/Reading sections and get 75%

        When done, print out 2 pages --the one that has your name and ACT in a blue bar and has scores "Within Time" "Total" "Correct" etc AND the page you get when you click on "Scores" - it has "Overall Results" (blank unless you do the whole test) and "English Results" with the Raw Score and Percentile underneath the bar.

    Search for your topic in Ebsco Research Databases, Student Research Center, and Points of View
    In Ebsco Research Databases, select MAS Ultra, Newspaper Source, ERIC, TOPICsearch -- remember to select "Full Text"
    In Student Research Center, select Magazines, Newspapers, Books and Encyclopedias -- remember to select "Full Text"
    In Points of View, simply enter your subject (NOTE: in all of these, remember to word your subject in different ways)
            Read as many articles as possible before printing. Print the article that relates best to your subject/ thesis
    For this assignment, you need to turn in at least one source/article
    Staple the article, Highlight the article info (author's name, title of article, name of journal, date) at top of article
    Write the author's last name in the top right corner

Now, type an outline
Your outline is a "map" of your research paper. Consult the author's page on this website and your notes taken in class for the format and ideas of what to include. The outline should be approximately one full page (remember it is double-spaced).

    FINDING GOOD SOURCES for your RESEARCH PAPER on EBSCO
    Go to www.lib.chattanooga.gov -- on left, i n blue column click on "Databases"
    Click on "Search ALL or selected Ebsco databases, type in your library card number (or use 22491000213137)
    Check the boxes of MasterFILE Premier and TOPICsearch and the SERIALS directory
        On the next page, select the Full Text box, then type your subject in the Find:___________box
            Skim overr titles and go into the articles that look pertinent to your thesis, word your subject in different ways
            Read as many articles as possible to get an overview before printing
       Print the articles that relate best to your subject/ thesis (print only Full Text articles, not letters, abstracts only, book reviews)
    For your sources, you will need 4 from Ebsco, 1 website (.gov, .edu, some .org -- best to have an author) and 1 library book
    When you have the Ebsco and website sources/articles printed, staple each article separately
    Highlight the article info (author's name, title of article, name of journal, date) at top of article
    Write the author's last name in the top right corner

Read through the articles thoroughly, highlighting portions you want to use in your paper. These would be things like
    -specific info (such as statistics or a study that was done)
    -quotation from a professionale
    -actual case (such as a court case or a story in the article

When you have read all your articles, you should be pretty firm in what your thesis will be. Now go back to the highlighted parts of your sources and decide which parts you will use in your paper. Put these onto note cards with the source's author's last name at the top. These cards can be computer done, but they must be identified (put the author's name on the top left, put your name on the top right) and cut apart to become your note cards.

You are to do 12 note cards (approx. 2 from each source). Your complete packet (sources/articles, note cards, research paper ideas sheet, and library book) must be turned in using the envelope given you in class.

You need to answer these questions in a 300-word essay.

Contrast yourself to the main character.
Analyze two themes (message, universal truth, etc.) you have gotten from this book.
Give an overview of the events/plot, characters, and setting of this book.

   Write "Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God" -- a 'rebuttal' sermon patterned after Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" on p. 55 (you must read this!)

    Include 3 figures of speech (simile/metaphor - see p. 1053 + 1059) and underline them
    Use one Bible tet (other than John 3:16) - this means the word of the text and the reference; underline this also

    Answer the Study and Discussion questions #1 and 2 for both stories (on pages 31 and 48)
