Library Tour

1. Circulation Desk--For check out and returning of books, videos, etc. (A returned book should remain in the library for 24 hours before being renewed; however, if a student is involved in a research project and still needs the book, that restriction is waived. Books are not renewed over the phone.)

2. Reserve Materials--Should be requested at the Circulation Desk. (Faculty may place materials on reserve in order to insure that the entire class may have a chance to read or view these materials.)

3. On-Line Catalog--Materials in the college library can be located through the use of this catalog by searching for author, title, or subject with on-screen instructions. (The catalog is constantly being updated.)

4. Current Periodicals and Newspapers--The latest editions of periodicals are on a display in this area for your examination and reading. These items must be used in this area of the library. If you need to make photocopies of any articles, you must check them out with the attendant at the desk. (A copy machine is near the Circulation Desk.)

5. Periodicals Room--Houses bound volumes of the non-current issues of periodicals, periodicals on microfilm, ERIC on microfiche, and the microform readers.

6. Library "Open" Stacks--Contain books that are classified and arranged by the Library of Congress system.

7. Reference Room--An extensive, non-circulating collection containing many reference books including . . .

8. Indexes to Periodicals--The most efficient method to find a magazine or journal article is to use an idex to periodical literature. Periodical indexes exist in almost every area of general interest as well as specialized academic fields. Each index will provide basically the same format including: Barticle title, author, and periodical title for any given article. The volume # of the journal, the page(s) the article is located on, and the date of the journal. (Lost on the next page.)

Academic Abstracts

A computerized index, which contains full bibliographic citations (author, title, source, section, page, etc.) as well as abstracts (summaries) of the articles. All periodicals received by McKee Library are highlighted. Searched can be done by a keyword or a string of keywords.

Applied Science and Technology Index

The index differs from the above in that there is no author approach other than the citations to book reviews. Subjects' headings are directed toward the non-specialist. Fields covered are the pure sciences, ranging from the astronomy to zoology, and the applied sciences, which include transportation, food, and a variety of engineering fields.

Business Periodicals Index

BPI is a subject index for accounting, advertising, and public relations, automation, banking, communication, economics, finance and investments, insurance, labor management, marketing, taxation, as well as for specific businesses, industries, and trades.

Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature

Periodicals, articles, and books about the various concerns of health professionals in the areas of nursing and allied health are indexed here. Practical nursing, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, and respiratory therapy articles are included.

Education Index

This is the cumulative author and subject index to approximately 288 educational periodicals, proceedings, yearbooks, bulletings, and monographic series published in the English Language. Subjects include counseling, teaching methods and curriculum, special education, research, and other aspects of the field of education.

General Science Index

This index lists periodical articles by subject from science periodicals of a scholarly but not highly technical nature. Articles vary from subjects such as raccoons to the problems of nuclear waste management.

Humanities Index

Periodical articles are indexed from the mor scholarly journals from fields such as painting, sculpture, history, linguistics, language, folklore, theology, philosophy, and literature.

Psychological Abstracts

This American Psychologocial Association index provides bibliographic information about its entries and abstracts or summaries of these entries. Psychology and related disciplines are indexed for more than 850 journals and about 1,500 books, reports, and scientific documents. The abstracts are arranged under sixteen broad subject categories, each are assigned a number. Both author and subject indexes are provided in each issue; however, for faster searching, consult the subject index first to find the abstract numbers needed to locate the pertinent information.

Public Affairs Information Service Bulletin (McKee has through 1985 only)

An important index for students doing research in the social sciences, this work includes pamphlets, books, periodicals, government documents, organizational reports and conference proceedings.

Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature

This index is probably the most widely used and well known of the indexes. It covers the more popular magazines, which are general rather than specific in nature and which include all subject areas. The articles are written for the average reader rather than for the scholar. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author and subject.

Social Science Index (called Social Science and Humanities Index from 1965 to 1974; called International Index from 1907 to 1964)

This work indexes scholarly periodicals dealing with the social sciences (for example, anthropology, economics, politics, law, psychology, sociology, and other related subjects). Before 1974 the index also included subjects for the humanities such as philosophy, literature, and history.
