Kennings are metaphorical, synonymous phrases or compound words used instead of the name of a person or thing, and are common in Anglo-Saxon poetry, especially Beowulf. (Example Kennings: Rule Enforcer could be the school's main disciplinarian; Meat Piercer could be an ordinary dinner fork)
1. On your own, write at least 10 kennings for well-known people and/or common objects.
2. When finished with your kennings list, work in a small group and interpret each other's kennings.
3. As a group, choose the best kennings.
4. Be prepared to present your best kennings to the class.
5. Complete your kennings list by filling in people and/or objects that each kenning represents.
